Ten Biblical Principles Against Contemporary Worship/Music

  1. Deceives Youth into Violating the Fifth Commandment: 'Honor thy father and mother...'  (Exodus 20:12)

  2. Violates God's Command: 'Neither give place to the devil' (Ephesians 4:27)

  3. Mocks God's Command: 'Love not the world' (I John 2:15-17)

  4. Disregards God's Command: 'Destroy not the work of God'[Cause offense to brother] (Romans 14:19-23)

  5. Defies God's Command: 'Discern both good and evil' (Hebrews 5:14)

  6. Disobeys God's Command: 'Abstain from all appearance of evil' (I Thessalonians 5:21-22)

  7. Denies God's Command: 'I will not be brought under the power of any' (I Corinthians 6:12)

  8. Opposes God's Command: 'What communion hath light with darkness' (II Corinthians 6:14)

  9. Ignores God's Command for All Ministers/Leaders to be Qualified: 'Not a novice... (I Timothy 3:6ff)

The Three-Fold Test of Godly Music 'A threefold cord is not quickly broken' (Ecclesiastes 4:12)

1. Godly Music Must  Be Pure: Test the Spirit  1. Who does it glorify? (God, the performer, world's philosophy, composer etc.)
                                                        (I John 4:1)  2.  How does this music reflect Biblical doctrine and Godly living?
                                                                             3. Does this music violate your spirit in any way?

2. Godly Music Must Be Orderly: Test the Message  1. Are all the elements of this music combined in proper balance?
                                               (I Corinthians 14:33)      2. Does the melody line have a balanced rising/falling contour matching words?  
                                                                                       3. What message is conveyed by the harmony? (Mood, emotions, atmosphere)
                                                                                       4. Does the rhythm of the music dominate the message?
                                                                                       5. Does the organization of the music show orderly design w/definite beg' & end?
                                                                                       6. Does the music have a balanced message of tension and relaxation?
                                                                                       7. Does the music overpower the text thereby hiding the message?
                                                                                       8. Is the text accurate according to the Word of God?
                                                                                       9. Is the text ambiguous or unclear in meaning?
                                                                                     10. Does the performer imply intimacy w/listener w/breathy lyrics sagging/sliding?
                                                                                     11. Is it a new sound as in entertainment style or a new song show'g a changed life?

3. Godly Music Must Be Edifying: Test the Fruit   1. Does the music refresh and invigorate the body?
                                                           (Heb 13:15)  2. Does the music inspire the mind and invoke healthy, emotional responses?
                                                                                   3. Does the music uplift the spirit and draw the listener closer to God?
                                                                                   4. Does the music end on a note of praise to or focus on God?
